Margrethe was born on 16 April 1940 at Frederik VIII's Palace, Amalienborg, just a week after Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark. She was the eldest child of Crown Prince Frederik (later King Frederik IX) and Crown Princess Ingrid. In 1953, a constitutional amendment allowed female succession, making her heir presumptive. She married French diplomat Henri de Laborde de Monpezat in 1967, who became Prince Henrik; they had two sons, Frederik and Joachim. She succeeded her father upon his death in January 1972.

Educated at home and at N. Zahle's School, she studied at several European universities including Cambridge, Aarhus, the Sorbonne, and the London School of Economics, though she holds no full university degree. She served in the Women's Flying Corps, rising to lieutenant. As queen, she worked as a scenographer, costume designer, and illustrator of works by J. R. R. Tolkien. In 2022, she announced that from 2023, Prince Joachim's descendants would lose their prince/princess titles, a decision that caused public shock and confusion within the family.
